Distinguish the labels

FSC explains that Recycled products use reclaimed material, while Mix can combine FSC-certified, recycled and controlled material. For paper, read the official label guidance and any recycled-content statement together; avoid importing rules for wood products into a tissue comparison.

Verify the exact product

Photograph the label and product code when comparing options. Verify that the certification claim applies to the product you are buying, rather than assuming every item made by the same company has the same label.

Separate sourcing from performance

Certification concerns fiber sourcing. It does not by itself show softness, strength, plumbing performance or whether your local waste service accepts the used paper. Evaluate each of those questions separately.

Before you decide

  • Read the FSC wording in full.
  • Check recycled content separately.
  • Do not infer softness or local recyclability from a forestry label.
